Welcome to Meridian-Kessler
Just 15 minutes due north of downtown you’ll find the historic Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, located in the heart of Midtown. Though covering a relatively small area, four of the eight districts in Meridian-Kessler are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Washington Park, Oliver Johnson’s Woods, Forest Hills and upscale Meridian Street.
The majority of homes in Meridian-Kessler were built in the early 20th century, and often feature a lot size of under a half acre. Many residents here enjoy its reputation of being a small town within a big city, with exceptional community spirit. The majority of homes have been well-kept and are along streets that are great for strolling or biking. Historic preservation is important here to protect the integrity and vintage charm of the entire neighborhood.
A great introduction to the area would be the annual Meridian-Kessler Home and Garden Tour, the oldest and most popular event of its kind in the city. The tour takes place in June each year, when yards and gardens are at their most beautiful. Another popular area event for over 25 years is the French Market at the St. Joan of Arc church and school. The festival takes place each September, and offers live music, food, arts and crafts booths, and activities for children.
At 49th and Pennsylvania Streets you’ll find specialty shops, restaurants and cafes, a locally owned hardware store, and services such as salons, fitness studios, and spas. On the east side of the neighborhood is SoBro, an area that has very recently become a trendy destination for unique shopping and eateries.
